Canary mail test9/18/2023 ‘After a canary had been gassed three times, he classed it as “P.B.,” and promoted him to the headquarters dugout, where his only duty was to sing to the Commanding Officer,’ one report said. One Company Commander kept a careful eye on his avian tunnelling team. In the trench conditions of chaos and the constant threat of death, soldiers could easily fall in love with their canaries. Canaries impressed with their resilience and lifted spirits with their song. Such tales of cheery endurance clearly echoed popular and propagandist ideals of plucky British fighting spirit. Nevertheless, the canary seemed to ignore the shells and sang beautifully. The little bird would get ‘so black with smoke that it’s a job to distinguish it from a sparrow’, he wrote. In a letter published in the Daily Mail, one rifleman wrote to a friend that ‘our only companion is a little canary we rescued from a deserted house’. In the trenches too they were sometimes kept simply as pets. There was an intimate relationship between soldier and bird, derived in part from domestic life where they were often kept as caged songsters in working-class homes. While canaries had this official role in the war, they were also objects of affection. To ensure their sensitivity as gas detectors, birds were even given pedicures so that their claws could not grip too tightly. He never failed us though.’ The sensitivity of canaries to carbon monoxide meant they gave early warning to its presence, not necessarily when they stopped singing, but when they panted for breath or could no longer grip their perch. Canaries’, told of a bird called Dick who after his job underground would ‘often as not reach the surface again a limp little form lying at the bottom of his cage. Stories of the bravery of canaries at the front made the national press at home. But the tunnels could only be re-entered once a bird had breathed the air.Ī sapper from the 3rd Australian Tunnelling Company’s Mine Rescue Station carries a small cage for a canary or a mouse. When German digging teams came across Allied tunnels and blew them up, the atmosphere of the underground labyrinth was flooded with poison gases. Reaching beneath the German front was an underground network of chambers that could be packed with explosives to destroy the enemy from below. The Mines Committee recommended that two or three canaries were kept at rescue stations to test tunnels below the trenches for carbon monoxide. But there were tensions in the depiction of British forces as sensitive and caring because a more urgent national message was that our men had the strength to win the war. More than this, however, the relationship between soldier and canary came to symbolise a view of British spirit that was used as a powerful image in wartime propaganda. The nature of their dangerous underground work with tunnellers forged close companionship. Canaries were a special kind of British hero of the First World War trenches.

Kindergarten math games difficult9/18/2023 By playing math games for kindergartners, you’re giving your child a hands-on and tactile way to master the skills they’ll need each year in school. She seems to be doing well with all the math concepts they are doing in school, but I feel I need to take a step back and focus on clearing up this confusion. JMath Math Games & Activities Save & Share: Kindergarten math games are a great way to practice math skills your kids are learning. Comparing the numbers seems to help with the confusion at the moment, but then I’ll see her making the same mistake again in a few days. Or we’ll compare the numbers on a number line or hundreds chart. Other times, I’ll write the two numbers on paper, and have her draw the ten frame and base ten cubes for each number, and compare the numbers. This works with most of the “teen” numbers, but not 12 because there is no “teen” in it’s name as a clue. If she or I had just said the number, I will repeat it and exaggerate the “-teen” or “-ty” and tell her to listen carefully. I only noticed it in the last few months, as they have been working with larger numbers. Interestingly, I did not notice this last year in K. She sometimes self-corrects with the other numbers, but does not correct as often with 12 and 20. She often confuses 12 and 20, and will sometimes confuse other “-teens” with “-ty” numbers. Thanks! Great review of teen numbers! I always love your resources to supplement what my kid does in school.ĭo you have any suggestions for confusing “-teen” numbers with “-ty” numbers (20, 30, 40, etc.)? You’ll get ten board games for each variation! The bundle comes with a variety of BINGO games for the teen numbers: I reminded my daughter that the 1 means “one group of ten.” The 5 means “extra ones.”Īfter all the attention we’ve given to the teen numbers in recent months, she caught on quickly. They took turns drawing a number, saying it aloud, and finding the corresponding square on their board. She and her first grade brother (who knows numbers past 100, but enjoys BINGO), liked playing this game together. I decided to create some BINGO games to give my preschooler even more practice building number recognition with teen numbers. She has to name it as we take turns moving along the path with a die. On each space, I write a number from 11-20. I draw a path on a piece of paper and divide it into spaces. I also make simple homemade follow the path games. She names the number (I correct her if she’s wrong), and she finds its match in the living room. Then I hand her the other notes, one at a time. Then I write them on a second set of notes. I write each number from 11-20 on sticky notes – one per note. One thing we’ve done is to play a game with sticky notes. Simple (no printer ink required) games to practice the teen numbers In the last few months, we’ve done a few simple activities to help her remember them. My Four (almost five) has struggled to consistently remember her teen numbers. What is it about those tricky teen numbers? On the hunt for teen number activities? Try these BINGO games.

Jasmine aladin costume ideas gargoyle9/18/2023 When she first appears at the palace, Jasmine is introduced as fiery and no-nonsense, with zero tolerance for anyone that belittles her character. "You're not gonna find another girl like her in a million years." Screenwriters Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio called for an aged up and redesigned Aladdin, while also expanding Jasmine's character to be "stronger". While observing preliminary sketches of Aladdin and Jasmine (the former of whom was portrayed as a young boy, while Jasmine was a young woman), Jeffrey Katzenberg believed that a love story between the two would be seen as unrealistic, as a woman of Jasmine's age and beauty would never fall for a juvenile like Aladdin. They sought to remedy the issue by adding characters that were "animation-friendly", thus, the handmaiden was replaced with a pet tiger.Įven with Musker and Clements onboard to direct, there was still work to be done with the story. Although Ron Clements and John Musker enjoyed the love story blossoming between Aladdin and Jasmine, they believed Woolverton's script featured too many human characters and seemed better suited for a live-action format as consequence. Woolverton also gave the princess a human handmaiden for a friend. In Linda Woolverton's screenplay, the relationship between Aladdin and Jasmine served as a driving force of the narrative, slowly replacing Aladdin's desire to make his mother proud (as was the case in Ashman's treatment). Furthermore, Jasmine's "spoiled brat" persona was scrapped in favor of a character that was more endearing and sympathetic. The Abbi character was cut, while Jasmine was given a larger role as Aladdin's love interest. However, as development on an Aladdin film furthered at the studio, Ashman's screenplay saw major revisions. In the end of Ashman's treatment, Aladdin is offered the princess' hand in marriage, but he ultimately refuses in favor of his true love, Abbi. There was also another female character, a tomboyish street urchin named Abbi, whom joined Aladdin on his quest to rescue the princess. Her personality was fleshed out in the song " Call Me A Princess", in which she arrogantly flaunts her royal status. Loosely inspired by the Aladdin folk tale, Howard Ashman's 1988 treatment for an animated adaptation of Aladdin included a shallow, spoiled, and materialistic princess named Jasmine, whose "brattiness" served as comic relief in the story. When she meets Aladdin, she discovers the wonders she's often imagined outside the palace walls. She's free-spirited, confident, and kind. Official Description Jasmine is a dreamer who loves her pet tiger, Rajah. The restrictions have also left her with the desire to see the world and experience life outside of being a sheltered princess, which would eventually result in meeting Aladdin. These restrictions have ultimately prevented Jasmine from making any connections, as she states she had never had any real friends, aside from Rajah. Despite living a lavished life, she often felt suffocated by the laws of her kingdom, which restricted her from socializing with her subjects and forced her into unjust practices, such as forced marriages. In Disney Princess Enchanted Tales: Follow Your Dreams, the legacy of her mother played a fairly large role, where the Sultan mentioned seeing his wife in his daughter, specifically through Jasmine's relationship with her mother's horse, Sahara.īecause of her status as a princess, Jasmine was unfortunately forbidden to ever leave the palace walls, spending her life sheltered within the confines of the royal home. In the chapter A Gift from the Stars, from the book Tales from Agrabah, it is revealed that, whenever Jasmine would long for her mother, the princess would sit on her balcony and stargaze for a period of time. She believed him to be a spiritual gift from her deceased mother, who would tell her stories about the "star tiger" named Rajah. Jasmine is the daughter of the Sultan of Agrabah and his late wife, residing in the kingdom's palace alongside her father and loyal, yet overprotective pet tiger, Rajah, whom she found years before the events of the film. 11.8 Disney parks and other live appearances.11.4.4 Disney Princess Enchanted Tales: Follow Your Dreams.5.2 Disney's Aladdin in Nasira's Revenge.2.6 Disney Princess Enchanted Tales: Follow Your Dreams.

Kobo aura edition 2 operating system9/18/2023 The Mobius technology replaces the glass TFT backplane with a flexible plastic TFT backplane. The Carta technology is the latest version of this layer and determines the optical properties, such as contrast ratio. In the case of E Ink, this layer contains the actual ink particles that creates the image. The layer on top of the TFT backplane determines the actual display type (e.g. These transistors control each pixel on the display. The TFT backplane is an array of transistors that are typically deposited on a piece of glass. Like most display technologies, E Ink displays use an active matrix thin film transistor (TFT) backplane. Now you might be wondering, how is this e-reader using two different screen technologies at the same time? The spec sheet for the Forma mentions that it uses both Mobius and Carta HD. Many e-readers are using Carta HD or Mobius for the screens, but Kobo is using both. The Kobo Forma has a giant 8 inch capacitive touchscreen display with a resolution of 1440 × 1920 and 300 PPI. The Kindle Oasis 2 has a 1,000 mAh and the new Kobo Forma has a 1,200 mAh battery. The Forma also has a far superior battery, which should last around three weeks on a single charge. Whereas the Kindle Oasis has a small hump, where the battery is. The back of Forma e-reader is completely flat and can be held with one hand. It less of a liberal copy and more of an improvement on an existing concept. It features the same asymmetrical industrial design as the Kindle Oasis, but Kobo takes it to an entirely new level with their hardware and software experience. The Kobo Forma is the boldest design decision yet. The only products that really stood out from the rest of their modern portfolio was the recently discontinued Voyage and the first and second generation Oasis. Things got so bad that Amazon had to create a dedicated page that gave out each products model ID number, so people could know exactly what unit they had. Each generation of the Paperwhite looked exactly the same and ditto with the Kindle Basic. They were the first company to make waterproof e-readers popular and their devices ranged in size from the five inch Kobo Mini to the eight inch Kobo Aura One and Forma.Īmazon has kept product design deadsimple over the past six or seven years. They constantly change the grip on the back of the e-reader for each generation and really pioneered the concept of Comfortlight, which basically added a new color temperature system. They have experimented with big and bright home buttons and different colors. Kobo has always innovated their product designs over the years and it has won them a ravenous following of serious readers.

Kinase consensus sequence9/18/2023 Animal cells contain at least nine CDKs, four of which, CDK1, 2, 3, and 4, are directly involved in cell cycle regulation. Most of the known cyclin-CDK complexes regulate the progression through the cell cycle. Viable, but both male & female infertile.ĬDKs and cyclins in the cell cycle Reduced size, insulin deficient diabetes. Viable, but both males & females sterile. Reduced size, imparted neural progenitor cell proliferation. Types Table 1: Known CDKs, their cyclin partners, and their functions in the human and consequences of deletion in mice CDK The consensus sequence for the phosphorylation site in the amino acid sequence of a CDK substrate is PX, where S/T* is the phosphorylated serine or threonine, P is proline, X is any amino acid, K is lysine, and R is arginine. CDKs phosphorylate their substrates on serines and threonines, so they are serine-threonine kinases. Without cyclin, CDK has little kinase activity only the cyclin-CDK complex is an active kinase but its activity can be typically further modulated by phosphorylation and other binding proteins, like p27. By definition, a CDK binds a regulatory protein called a cyclin. CDKs are relatively small proteins, with molecular weights ranging from 34 to 40 kDa, and contain little more than the kinase domain. In fact, yeast cells can proliferate normally when their CDK gene has been replaced with the homologous human gene. They are present in all known eukaryotes, and their regulatory function in the cell cycle has been evolutionarily conserved. They are also involved in regulating transcription, mRNA processing, and the differentiation of nerve cells. outer ring: I = Interphase, M = Mitosis inner ring: M = Mitosis G1 = Gap phase 1 S = Synthesis G2 = Gap phase 2.Ĭyclin-dependent kinases ( CDKs) are the families of protein kinases first discovered for their role in regulating the cell cycle.

Tower bridge museum9/18/2023 Even more impressive are a pair of accumulators, huge iron-clad cylinders for building pressure, weighing over 100 tons each. You can see the huge boilers that fed power to the neighbouring engines used to raise and lower the drawbridges. You can see perfectly well, but taking decent photos through the plexiglass is rather difficult.īy contrast to the very popular walkway part of the experience, the Victorian Engine Rooms are relatively quiet and don't get nearly so many visitors, though I, for one, found them perhaps more interesting than the walkway views. Though it certainly is interesting, the sheer number of visitors walking over the plexiglass floor panels have left them rather less than crystal clear. Most visitors, however, come to take advantage of the newest addition to the Tower Bridge Experience the chance to look through a clear plexiglass floor of the walkway for views of the bridge surface beneath and the possibility of watching boats travel under the drawbridge. You can descend to see the Victorian Engine Room, with the original steam engines still in working order, and climb to the covered walkway high above the road surface for panoramic views across London. There was a high-level walkway for pedestrian traffic. The stone finish served a dual purpose of protecting the underlying steel frame and giving the bridge a more pleasing visual impact. The steel framework was encased in a mix of Portland stone and Cornish granite. Bridge construction took 8 years, and the hard work of 432 construction labourers to complete and used 11,000 tons of steel for the framework of the towers and walkways. To create the bridge, two huge piers were sunk into the mud of the riverbed to support the new bridge. The original engines and accumulators are still in place, in the Victorian Engine Room area of the Tower Bridge Exhibition. The original steam engines have been replaced by oil and electric engines, but the hydraulic-driven bascule system is still original. From start to finish the bascules can raise the bridge from 0 degrees angle to a maximum of 86 degrees in about 1 minute. Because the energy was 'stored', there was minimal delay in raising the bridge it could be manipulated up or down at a moment's notice. Tower Bridge is next to the Tower of London on the North Bank of the Thames and next to the “Beehive” Mayoral offices on the South Bank of the Thames. The energy created by the steam engines was stored in 6 large containers called accumulators, ready to be used at a moment's notice to raise and lower the bridge. LOCATION & CONTACTĪddress: Tower Bridge, Tower Bridge Road, London SE1 2UP You can see Tower Bridge on most of the river cruises available on the Thames and there are a range of options with latest prices here: Thames River Cruises.Īfter your visit to Tower Bridge, we’d recommend taking a walk down the re-developed South Bank of the Thames past the “Bee Hive” mayor’s offices to the Hays Galleria wharf which is full of restaurants and shops. A good place to view this is from the walkway in front of the Tower of London. If you want to catch this spectacle, check out the bridge opening times. One of the most magical sights on the Thames is to see Tower Bridge opening to allow boats to go through. The Tower Bridge Exhibition is open daily in the summer from 10am to 6.30pm and in the winter from 9.30am to 6pm. Adult admission is £8, children £3.40 and family tickets are also available (2012 prices). We’d recommend the Tower Bridge Exhibition which shows you how it works and how they built it. It takes you right up to the top of the towers and back down to the engine room. If you don’t want to see the exhibition and take the tour, you can of course just walk across the bridge for free and you get a great sense of the scale of the structure by doing this. Tower Bridge, built in the 1880s, is one of London’s most famous landmarks and it spans the River Thames near to the Tower of London. It’s a great piece of architecture and the workings inside are fascinating too.

Lightning mcqueen cars 3 crash9/18/2023 He takes them to a bar, where they also meet fellow racers River Scott, Junior Johnson, and Louise Nash. When they arrive, they do a lap on the dirt track where Doc used to race before meeting Smokey, Doc's old crew chief. Later, Mack and Lightning catch up to her, with Lightning apologizing for yelling at her and convincing her to join him on a trip to Doc Hudson's home town of Thomasville. However, her family didn't believe she should pursue this, and when she had the chance to do her first race, she got overwhelmed by fear of the other cars and left. She tells him that her whole life, she wanted to be a racer just like him. Upset by Lightning's words and the destroyed winner trophy, she orders Mack to pull over, and asks Lightning to ask her if she wanted to be a trainer her whole life. When he finally does talk, he explodes in anger at her, saying that instead of training to be faster than Jackson Storm, he's too busy taking care of Cruz. While they leave Thunder Hollow, Cruz tries to cheer up Lightning, who just stares angrily at her. However, she accidentally trips a water truck over, which splashes water on Lightning and exposes his true identity to the crowd and the world, as the events are reported on the news. Cruz is saved from death twice by Lightning, and is later declared the winner. They must race against the other participants in the derby, including champion Miss Fritter. However, the two soon realize that they are at a demolition derby, and it is too late for them to leave. Lightning is covered in mud to avoid paparazzi. When they arrive, both Lightning and Cruz go by the fictional identities of Chester Whipplefilter and Frances Beltline, respectively. Lightning decides to do further training at Thunder Hollow, with Cruz joining him. They then successfully race to the end of the beach, with Lightning's top speed gauged at 198 mph, which is slower than Jackson Storm. Lightning and Cruz spend the entire day on Fireball Beach, with the former ending up training the latter how to race on sand after Cruz fails to do this several times. After Lightning convinces Sterling to give him another chance to race, Cruz is sent by Sterling to join Lightning on Fireball Beach to train.Ĭruz plans to use her digital assistant Hamilton to track Lightning's speed, but Lightning must stay close to Cruz for this to work. She starts Lightning out with some simple exercises, though Lightning gets increasingly impatient by this and quickly goes on the racing simulator against Cruz's advice, though he ends up losing control of himself and crashes into the screen. She tells Lightning that she's a big fan of him, and grew up watching him on television (even referring to him as " senior project"). She is introduced by Sterling to Lightning McQueen, who enlists her help in defeating Jackson Storm after his big crash. While she’d love to help him find his way back to the top, she knows the competition is faster than ever, and victory is all about speed-or is it?Ĭruz is a kind, optimistic trainer for the Rust-eze Racing Center, first seen coaching a few cars on the treadmills.
